Economy
The seaside city of Xiamen is a modern and international hub with competitive economic strength and emerging industrial bases. Since being chosen as one of China's Special Economic Zones, the vice-provincial city has developed and expanded pillar industries including electronics, mechanics, shipping and logistics, tourism and exhibitions, finance and commerce as well as software and information services.
In 2018, Xiamen's regional GDP totaled 479.141 billion yuan ($70.92 billion), up 7.7 percent year on year. The industrial output recorded 639.232 billion yuan, increasing 8.8 percent from a year earlier, the highest growth rate in four years.
The new material industry generated 88.88 billion yuan, a 14.84 percent increase year on year. The tourism revenue in Xiamen rose to 140.2 billion yuan, up 19.99 percent year on year, according to the Xiamen Tourism Development Commission on Jan 21. The service industry contributed to 54.6 percent of the city's GDP growth. Xiamen residents reached the highest disposable income at 50,900 yuan, up 9.3 percent year on year.

Xiamen city governs six districts—Siming district, Huli district, Jimei district, Haicang district, Tong'an district and Xiang'an district.
